Who I work with
I work mostly with people who are autistic or are exploring the possibility that they may be, with a special concern for older autistic people. I am an older autistic person myself with many years of experience in elderly care, in residential settings and in the community.
I also work with people who have experienced trauma and abuse in cults, high-demand religious organisations and other total institutions.
About Me and How I Work
The longer I work as a therapist the more convinced I am that when I go into the therapy room I do not meet an issue, a problem, or a diagnosis; I meet a human being. And if we are going to work together, then I need to be seeing the client’s world (as far as I can) through the client’s eyes. Carl Rogers, the founder of person-centred therapy, said “The best vantage point for understanding behavior is from the internal frame of reference of the individual.” So I hesitate to say that I specialise in any particular issue; I hope I specialise in listening deeply and with attention to human beings. You are very welcome to bring your dog to in-person sessions. I also have a therapy cat for anyone who might find that helpful.
Qualifications & Professional Background
My original qualification is a PG Dip from Persona Training / Stirling University. Since then I have undertaken regular CPD including a certificate in person-centred supervision and a certificate in Focusing skills. I have studied widely in the fields of trauma, autism and spiritual abuse. I am also a Certified Cyber-Therapist (in-depth qualification from the Online Therapy Institute).
Next Steps
You can contact me via my email address ettrick@counsellor.scot or else via the Counselling Directory here: https://www.counselling-directory.org.uk/counsellors/max-marnau
I don't charge for the first session (anything up to an hour) as it is a chance for us to get to know each other. I encourage potential clients to "shop around" until they find a therapist they feel they could work with.

I don't charge for the first session. Thereafter I operate a sliding scale of fees, from £50 to £30 per hour - you decide where you sit on that scale. While I would not like anyone to miss out on counselling because they can't afford it, I would appreciate it if those who can would pay the full fee.
