Who I work with
I work with a wide range of people, however many people who come to work with me identify as LGBTQIA+ and / or neurodivergent. My work is not issue-specific, however, I am well-versed in working with areas such as anxiety & depression, burnout, relationships, and meaning & purpose in life. I am collapse- & climate-aware and work very comfortably with issues related to the climate and environmental emergencies & other global events that affect our well-being. I offer both online sessions and in-person therapy from comfortable rooms a few minutes walk from the seafront in Hove.
About Me and How I Work
I have over 25 years experience working therapeutically since I began my formal training in Aotearoa/New Zealand in the late 1990s. Because one size does not fit all, I work in an integrative manner, meaning I draw on approaches that suit you and your individual styles, preferences and needs. This may include a blend of person-centred, psychodynamic, existential, body-based or experiential. I enjoy working at depth and getting to the root of things. I firmly believe that if we can free ourselves from unhelpful patterns and ways of seeing and being in the world, we can live lives of greater satisfaction and meaning. Central to the way I work is the therapeutic alliance, or working relationship, that we will strike up together. My style is invitational and, when appropriate, warmly challenging. As a gay man and later-in-life identified autistic man, I also know how profoundly important it is to come to place where we will be met with acceptance, affirmation and curiosity and not be judged, reprimanded or discriminated against for who we are.
Qualifications & Professional Background
I am a registered member of the BACP and an accredited member of NCPS. Accordingly I adhere to their respective Ethical Framework and Code of Ethics and am fully insured. I am also an ordinary member of the British Psychodrama Association. I completed my Diploma in Creative Supervision with the London Centre for Psychodrama in 2022. I also satisfied the requirements to become an accredited Brainspotting Practitioner in 2022. I completed my initial person-centred Diploma in Counselling in Aotearoa/New Zealand in the early 2000s and have continued to develop my practice in the intervening years. I continue to attend to my professional development through workshop attendance, reading and regular supervision. I also continue to attend weekly personal psychotherapy. Alongside my initial Diploma in Counselling, I also trained in the psychodrama method from 1998 to 2004. I am a member of the Climate Psychology Alliance, a network of therapy professionals with special focus on the climate and environmental emergencies and their effects on wellbeing. I take a special interest in trauma, grief and working at depth.
