Francis Higgins

He/They

Online and Telephone

I am a queer, trans, disabled, neurodivergent therapist based near Edinburgh. I offer online and telephone person-centred therapy (otherwise known as counselling & psychotherapy) and supervision informed by anti-oppressive practices such as the neurodiversity paradigm, intersectional feminism and disability justice. My work is relational and trauma-informed. Through the relational qualities of person-centred therapy (empathy, genuineness and positive regard) I aim to create a safe gentle space for you to explore difficult experiences. This can be more effective in getting to the deeper issues than a more confrontational approach especially for sensitive people and those with interpersonal trauma. Many people need a high degree of relational safety in order to work on vulnerable issues. I don’t subscribe to the ‘blank slate’ approach to therapy, I show up as a genuine person (with appropriate professional boundaries) and sometimes share my own experience, where that might be helpful to you. Many of the things I support people with I also have lived experience of including autism/ADHD and other neurodivergent traits, late diagnosis, burnout, trans and non-binary identity, disability/chronic health conditions and suicide bereavement. Long before discovering my neurodivergence or queerness I felt different, and I came to appreciate the freedom, creativity and diversity that comes from embracing this difference rather than trying to comform. I have a strong sense of justice. As well as a therapist I have been an activist, community organiser, mediator, artist and support worker.

Who I work with

I offer therapy for with a range of common issues such as depression, anxiety, stress, work-place bullying, mental health issues, childhood trauma, chronic illness, self-esteem and issues with identity.

I am also experienced in areas considered more specialist such as:

Neurodivergence (including autism/ADHD/AuDHD, RSD, PDA, burnout, late diagnosis)
Disability, chronic health conditions, ME/CFS

Gender, sexuality, trans and non-binary identity, relationship diversity (polyamory, relationship anarchy, kink)

Non-diet and fat-positive approaches to food and body image - intuitive eating/health at every size

Complex/traumatic bereavements such as suicide, unexpected loss and multiple bereavements.

I offer single session, short-term and long-term therapy and I am very flexible in terms of commitment.
I have a lot of experience and enjoy working with other therapists and trainees.
I do not work with couples, under 16’s, and I don’t work with people in the Edinburgh area to maintain boundaries.

Qualifications & Professional Background

CICS Diploma in Clinical Supervision (graduate summer 2025)

Advanced Certificate in Online & Telephone Counselling (2020)

Ba (Hons) Person Centred Therapy (2014)

I have run my own full-time private practice since 2018 working with the general population initially and increasingly focused on queer, neurodivergent and chronically ill people. I trained in online and telephone therapy in 2020 and more recently as a supervisor (2025).

I have delivered bereavement counselling in a hospice setting, online and via chat, supported people bereaved by suicide - individually and group support. I offered counselling to frontline staff during the pandemic and worked with EAPs.

I have a lot of experience with and enjoy working with other therapists and therapists-in-training. My qualifications and memberships are generally accepted by course providers.

I am currently an NCPS Accredited Registrant Membership Number: NCS23-00650 and I practice under their code of ethics.

I am a member of the Person Centred Association and the Psychotherapy and Counselling Union.

I was also a long term member of BACP and trained on a BACP accredited course so I am also familiar with working within the BACP Ethical Framework.

I have professional insurance.
