Ruth-anne Donellsen
Name only please
I offer in-person sessions in Nova Scotia, and virtual sessions across most parts of Canada.
I work with Autistic, ADHD, PDA, 2SLGBTQIA+, multiply disabled, chronically ill, and otherwise neurodivergent, adults (18+) who are seeking to understand and supporting themselves more fully, along with navigating big life events, transitions and times of exploration, such as education, employment, relationships, parenting, divorce, grief, co-occurring conditions (EDS, MCAS, ARFID, Alexithymia, etc.), identity development and shift, the menopause transition, and more.

About Me and How I Work
As a late identified AuDHD PDAer, single parent to two teens, previous homeschooling organic homesteader with punk rock, social justice, and Buddhist DIY roots, the therapy I offer is social justice-minded, identity-affirming and trauma informed. I view my clients as autonomous beings with their own direction, motivations and ways of being that drive who they wish to be and are in this world. We are all unique, and we have complicated lives, so what we explore together is directed by your desires for yourself, informed and affected by all that you are and will be. You always know yourself best. I'm here to provide my support, knowledge, facilitate growth, share information, develop skill, provide guidance, and offer a safe non-judgemental space to explore, expand and shift in your understanding and perspectives. I instinctively take a non-directive approach, but will be more directive, provide more prompts, and structure if requested directly, or I will offer it as an option if I get the sense it might ease engagement.
I do my best to accommodate client needs whenever possible. These can include many things, but for example if a client needs to avoid being perceived having their camera off is ok, or if situational mutism is a factor during a session, switching to text is always an option. I also offer home visits for local clients who are unable to make it to my office and find online sessions too challenging.
My view is that mental health is so much more than self-care and individual perspective, it is also deeply affected by systemic discrimination based on ableism, racism, gendered norms, privilege and oppression in all its varieties. This is why my work, although centred around the individual first, always involves a focus on social justice and affecting change in the society in which they reside. I believe therapy is inherently political, and my stance is one of justice for clients.
Qualifications and Professional Experience
I'm a Registered Counselling Therapist Candidate (RCT-C) with the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists. I have a MEd in Counselling from Acadia University and a BSc in Psychology from the University of Victoria. These qualifications provided me with a broad understanding, skill base, and an ethical awareness of mental health and the profession of counselling. But my true passion lies in the nature and variety of Autistic, and other neurodivergent, experiences and this has led me to seek out additional lived experience based and led training and educational events every opportunity I have.
I have my own lived experience to pull from, of course, but I intentionally expose myself to lived realities that differ from my own so that I can have a deeper and multifaceted understanding and lens to view my clients' experiences through.
Before my divorce, big move with my two children, and the burnout that led to my late Autistic discovery journey and my subsequent training as a counsellor, I worked many different roles in a university based program supporting Indigenous students to be successful in academic and culturally relevant and connected ways. This was when my true understanding of the importance of identity and group belonging began. I was a homeschooling parent living on an organic homestead for a number of years as well after the university position - a way I found to recover from burnout (although I didn't know it was that at the time) and get my life back in alignment.
I've been through many identity shifts in the last 20 years or so while rebuilding my life in a more authentic and sustainable way. I know how challenging and isolating that can be at times, and how helpful it can be to be able to talk things out with someone who gets it.
