About Me and How I Work

My theoretical approach to counselling is based in feminist theory. I strongly believe in social justice, advocacy, and reducing the power imbalance between therapist and client. I'm consistently striving to de-colonize and de-pathologize my practice; the majority of my continuing education as a therapist focuses on multi-cultural, anti-racist, disability, queer and trans issues within the counselling space and supporting marginalized clients.

My work is collaborative and I see my role as a guide, facilitator, and supporter of your goals. I'm generally non-directive in my approach, but will give a hard nudge if you need one. A lot of my work focuses on nervous system healing, helping you learn to trust your brain and body again (or for the first time ever!), incorporate sustainable practices and rest into your life, and have more satisfyingly reciprocal relationships with other humans. These are the spaces of growth for myself. both personally and professionally, and I frequently draw from my own lived experience to guide my therapeutic work with clients.
Heading Three: Qualifications and Professional Background
In this section, you might want to include:

Qualifications and Professional Experience

My training is in psychology and counselling with a behavioural neuroscience focus. I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, a PhD in Neuroscience, and a Master's Certificate in Rehabilitation Counselling, the sub-division of the counselling field that specifically works with disabled folks.

I hold multiple counselling designations, all of which require me to be constantly learning and growing as a therapist:
- Certified Rehabilitation Counsellor (CRC #553957) with the Commission on Rehabilitation Counsellor Certification (CRCC)
- Registered Therapeutic Counsellor (RTC #3058) with the Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapists of Canada (ACCT)
- Registered Counselling Therapist (CT #2494) with the Association of Counselling Therapists of Alberta (ACTA)

I have two decades of experience working in the field of disability and rehabilitation, including research, teaching, non-profit management, and now counselling for the past 8 years. I opened my private practice at the end of 2021.

Next Steps

I have a lovely therapy office in Moose Jaw, SK and invite you to see me in person if you are local. I’m also available for online sessions throughout the prairie provinces (AB, SK, MB). I’m always happy to schedule a free 15 minute consultation call to see if we might be a good fit. The best way to reach me is by email at kelly@synapsecounselling.com.

My standard fee is $150 for a 60 minute session. Sessions with me are typically covered by extended benefits plans that include coverage for clinical counsellors. To provide mutual aid within the disability community, I offer sliding scale fees to disabled, chronically ill, and neurodivergent clients who are uninsured, underemployed, or recipients of disability benefits.
